Project Profile: The Blue School, Wells, Somerset

The Blue School is a state run comprehensive in Somerset which occupies a number of individual buildings constructed in the 1970’s, they experience many problems associated with the age of the properties – not least the heating.

High running costs, expensive repairs and unhappy staff led Mr Leavens, the site manager to contact Heattend for advice.

The school’s main form of heating is a mixture of gas and oil fired wet systems, which is in the main satisfactory but fails to heat particular areas of the school. Initially a combination of portable plug in heaters was tried however these proved impractical and were regular damaged, left switched on overnight or tampered with.

To alleviate these problems Heattend was asked to suggest a product that was well constructed to withstand the day to day activities of a busy school, fully programmable to switch on / off at different times on different days of the week and would also be tamper proof.

The Ducasa Avant DGP electric radiator was the ideal recommendation, not only meeting the requirements of the school but also providing the additional benefits of accurate temperature setting and therefore economic savings. The Avant DGP can be programmed using the controls on each radiator, however the Ducasa remote programmer was suggested for ease of use because time and mode settings can be stored in the remote and transferred to an infinite amount of radiators.

At Heattend we understand that the installation or extension of any heating system must be quick and easy and schools are no exception as the buildings are often used from early morning to late evening and at the weekends. The unique ‘Easy Fit’ wall mounting system meant the heaters could be fitted in a matter of minutes, reducing disruption and saving onsite time for the electrician.

Since the installation of the Avant DGP radiators cold areas within the school are now warm, the staff have been very pleased with their effectiveness and maintenance costs have reduced.
